After the passing away of his dark-skinned wife, from who they sired Uday (Nana Patekar), Dubai-based criminal don, Shankar Shetty re-married a fair-skinned woman, who gave birth to fair-skinned Sanjana (Katrina Kaif). After the couple's passing, Uday takes over in his dad's footsteps, and takes it upon himself to try and get Sanjana married - in vain, as no one wants to be associated with a crime family. Then Uday's associate and brother, Sagar Pandey (Anil Kapoor), aspiring live-action painter, who had loved Iravati, got beat-up by her brothers, and was re-named Majnu, assists in finding a young man, Rajiv (Akshay Kumar), who lives with his maternal uncle, Dr. Ghunghroo (Paresh Rawal) and aunt. Dr. Ghunghroo still had one problematic condition that has thus far caused Rajiv to remain a bachelor. Ghunghroo has been searching only for a pure decent family, and anything less than that is immediately rejected. Dr. Ghunghroo has rejected 500 other families thus far. Meanwhile Rajiv had recently jumped into a burning building in order to save a woman inside. That woman turned out to be Sanjana, and Rajiv was immediately smitten. In his distraction he caught on fire prompting Sanjana to have to save both of them. Rajiv is now in love with Sanjana but has no idea who she is. Meanwhile, Uday and Majnu, in their hunt for Rajiv's alliance, hatch a plan where Majnu harasses Dr. Ghunghroo and demands 60 million rupees from him. Other actors in the ploy act as if they have been terribly wronged by Majnu, and convince Dr. Ghunghroo to go to Uday in order to save himself. Uday has dressed himself as a very respectable pundit, and when he is approached by Dr. Ghunghroo, he tells off Majnu for his behavior and Majnu immediately backs off. Dr. Ghunghroo in his complete gratitude realizes that Uday is a very decent man, and he hears from Uday that he is looking for a groom for his sister, Dr. Ghunghroo delightedly promises Uday that he will bring Rajiv to be wed to this sister. Little did he know that this sister was Sanjana. In a particular car ride however, a friend of Dr. Ghunghroo informs him that the two men are mobsters that have successfully conned him.
